A panel of missions-focused adults challenged Liberty University students to be bold for the gospel this past Thursday, Sept. 29, in the first of SGA's “Let’s Talk About It” sessions for the semester.
Students were invited to attend a discussion centered on the topic of “How to Change the World,” a timely subject considering it took place during Global Focus Week. The panelists including school of divinity professor Dr. Wheeler, a mobilizer for the missions organization Christar, and LU SERVE representative Valeria Alfageme, focused on the importance of being gospel-focused in bringing about change.

The questions focused on how to change modern culture in the world and within the church through the specific lens of the gospel. All three panelists (along with the moderator, global studies student Kate Dunkum), affirmed the importance of Christians knowing who they are in Christ before trying to change the world for him. They especially emphasized the ideas that the call to evangelize to all people is a charge placed on every Christian (not just the “special” ones) and moving beyond comfort zones for the sake of the gospel.
After the 45-minute period of prepared questions, they had 25 minutes open for questions from the audience. The questions targeted certain topics that had been discussed in the conversation, such as how to deal with fear and how to utilize specific gifts and passions within one’s calling.
This was the first installment of four “Let’s Talk About It” sessions that SGA plans to hold throughout the semester. SGA president Daniel Hostetter says they began these events in the spring of 2022 in order to start a dialogue among LU students about the issues that matter. “The goal of these is to get students in the same room with…people from all around campus life that have a lot of wisdom to share…to start these really valuable conversations that we believe will lead students not only toward good conversations but toward wisdom and maturity in the Christian walk,” said Hostetter.
Austin Greene, Director of Community Affairs for SGA, is excited to be heading up these events this semester and was satisfied with the outcome of their first session. “It was a really missions-focused event…really just to drive a conversation about missions, about what it means to have a purpose, make and impact and change the world,” said Greene.
The next “Let’s Talk About It” will be Oct. 13 and is entitled “Ring by Spring,” tackling the topic of relationships.
